10 tattoo aftercare tips

Thinking about getting inked? You should know about how to care for your new tattoo. Tattoos can be beautiful and meaningful pieces of art that last a lifetime, but they also need some care to preserve their beauty. This post will provide ten tips on how to take care of your new tattoo.

Tip 1: Protect it from the sun!

Avoid sun exposure or tanning beds for the first 2 weeks after getting your new tattoo. This can lead to sunburn and blistering. The sun will fade colors, cause fading of skin tones, and also cause discoloration from UV damage. It is best to cover it with clothing.

Tip 2: Stay hydrated

Hydration is key to maintaining healthy skin, and it’s especially important after getting a tattoo. Drinking plenty of water helps your skin stay moisturized from the inside out, which can promote faster healing and prevent your tattoo from drying out or becoming flaky.

Tip 3: Avoid Soaking

Do not submerge your tattoo in water (baths, pools, hot tubs, etc.) until it’s fully healed (2/3 weeks, depends on size/details) Showering is fine, but avoid letting the water hit the tattoo directly.

Tip 4: Do Not Pick or Scratch

It’s normal for the tattoo to scab and itch, but avoid picking at the scabs or scratching the area. This can cause scarring and affect the final appearance.

Tip 5: Wear Loose Clothing

Wear loose, clean clothing that won’t rub against your tattoo to avoid irritation and allow the skin to breathe.

Tip 6: Avoid Heavy Exercize

For the first few days, avoid strenuous activities that can cause excessive sweating or friction in the tattooed area.

Tip 7: Use Clean Bedding

Make sure your bedding is clean to prevent bacteria from getting into the tattooed area while you sleep.

Tip 8: Avoid Wearing Tight Accessories

Avoid wearing tight accessories or jewelry that can rub against your new tattoo, causing irritation or disrupting the healing process

Tip 9: Don't Shave the area

Avoid shaving the tattooed area until it’s fully healed to prevent irritation and infection.

Tip 10: Be Patient

  1. Healing times vary, typically taking around 6 weeks. Continue proper aftercare until the tattoo is fully healed, even if it seems fine earlier.
